Piggly Wiggly mum on terms of lease

Periodically, I keep checking back with Piggly Wiggly’s corporate headquarters concerning the status of the space the grocer used to occupy in Carolina Forest.
The Carolina Forest Piggly Wiggly closed Nov. 7, 2009, citing a glut of nearby grocery stores and overall economic downturn. The storefront remains empty as talks to lure a new tenant continue.
Piggly Wiggly has confirmed it still holds the lease on the space, but won’t comment on discussions about prospective tenants, nor will it talk about terms of its lease.
“We don’t disclose terms of the lease,” said Piggly Wiggly spokesman Christopher Ibsen. “The attempts to reach a deal are pretty quiet and typically not announced until an agreement has been reached.”
Although Piggly Wiggly won’t comment, another retail industry source has said such leases typically last 15-20 years.
Piggly Wiggly opened in August 2006. A lease signed then would continue until at least 2021.
“They [Piggly Wiggly] are going to continue to pay rent,” said Thurmond Brooks with the Providence Group, which is marketing commercial property at the Carolina Forest Wal-Mart.
Locally, the Carolina Forest Civic Association is doing all it can to spur activity in the center. It has listed economic development as one of its nine strategic goals in 2011.
Stay tuned for future updates.
