Michael Smith has been editor of the Carolina Forest Chronicle in Myrtle Beach, S.C., since its founding in November 2007. He has been a professional journalist in the Myrtle Beach area since the summer 2000, and has covered a wide variety of breaking news, major court cases and sporting events, including the 2010 SEC title game.
Since 2002, Michael has won more than 50 state press awards for reporting, photography and design. He is a two-time journalist of the year in South Carolina and also won the Reid F. Montgomery Freedom of Information Award in 2005. In 2008, he received honorable mention recognition by the National Newspaper Association for his investigative series on wasteful road spending.
Michael currently serves on two committees of the S.C. Press Association – the FOI Committee and the Workshops Committee.
